Communication: This key value is crucial for any relationship to make it. Arrange time to talk as often as you can but don't put to much pressure on yourselves. Flexibility is important to allow yourself the freedom to make plans with friends and family. Some people find it great to set schedules for talking but others find it's best just to wing it. Try to work something out that makes both of you happy and communicate with each other just as you would when your physically together. You can talk about your job, your family, your friends, your visions for your future, or any passions and hobbies you have.
Trust: Trust is another principle that is important for keeping a relationship strong and healthy. You need to trust that your partner is faithful all the time or it's going to stress you out and make you miserable. This is done by getting to know each other, asking the right questions, and having faith. If you establish a strong trust with each other, it won't matter how far away you are. You both will feel happy and enlightened to remain together and make it work well into the future. If trust is established from a distance, then it will be very strong when your finally together. Trust is talked about very much in How to
Make Long Distance Relationships Work.
Asking the Right Questions: It's highly beneficial to ask important questions to know whether you both take the relationship seriously or not. You don't want one person thinking you will be together forever and one person just having some fun. Take the time apart to get to know each other on a deeper and romantic level. Discover their passions in life and what they envision for the future.
Time together: It's important whether your living together or living in other countries to spend time together. Today you are lucky because technology makes it much easier to stay connected and involved with one another no matter where you are. Voip technologies like Skype is a great tool since it has video capabilities as well but you have to find other fun ways of hanging out or else it will become dull. Plan some virtual dates like playing a game online or watching the same movie.
Meet in person: Loneliness will creep up much of the time in a long distance relationship so it's important to plan visits with each other every couple months or so. I visited my girlfriend for every 4-5 months which was way to long apart but all we could afford at the time. The more you visit, the better! Meet each others families and learn about their childhood. Visit some place exciting together. Maybe a colonial city or adventure park. Have some excitement together and create memories to share in the future.
Think about the future: Start
asking the right questions. What do you both envision for yourselves and each other? Are you both interested in marriage at some point? Where do you want to live? What do you want to do for work? Having a vision will keep you motivated in staying together for the big picture.
